PATCHILL FARM
A handcrafted identity inspired by a herd of Devon Ruby Red, capturing the grit and character of a family-run farm.
I was commissioned by a colleague to create a bespoke birthday present for her father’s 70th birthday. My colleague wanted their family farm to have a ‘proper’ logo, as the farm regularly produce their own; honey, cider, apple juice, beef, pork, elderflower cordial and eggs. She wanted the logo to match her father’s taste; traditional and classic.
I crafted an original identity for Patchill farm. Not fancy or fussy, just a symbol for a father’s passion project. Her father’s main passion was a herd of Devon Ruby Red - a charismatic breed of beef cattle, with a distinctive look and temperament.
I used my hands to create the assets. There’s no short-cuts on the farm, so I decided to use linocut to create the identity. Linocutting is laboursome but I wanted to pay homage to my colleagues father and his daily toil on the farm, where there’s definitely no short-cuts.
